OPINION: Let’s Start a Dialogue
In light of recent events, I feel that I cannot hold in what I am about to say any longer. Though this might offend some, I unabashedly believe in what I am about to say and hope that all readers understand that I am saying this for the betterment of society and humanity as a whole: we need to start a dialogue.
Our obsession with electronic devices lead to slacktivism and apathy. We only escape into these devices because the world is too horrifying for us to confront alone. A dialogue will pull us out of the comforts of the virtual and allow us to face the aberration of face-to-face communication.
But before we start this dialogue, we should have another dialogue regarding the “ground rules” for this dialogue to ensure that the actual dialogue we have is as fruitless and inoffensive as possible. After all, the purpose of a dialogue is to make everyone feel as if they’re enacting change by doing absolutely nothing.
Number one, we should all agree to have this dialogue. We should also agree on a date and time for this dialogue. We also need to ensure that this dialogue has as many people as possible so as to include everyone and achieve less.
Number two, we should all agree that everyone’s opinion will be heard and addressed unless we disagree with them. Tomatoes and pepper spray will be provided for those who provide the dialogue with controversial or thought-provoking opinions.
Number three, we should all agree that we will come away from this dialogue believing that we did good. Let’s not be afraid to pat ourselves on the back a little bit. Whatever comes from this dialogue, we should know that we took a major step in solving nothing.
