Native American on Margarine Container Marginalized
ARDEN HILLS, MN — Longtime Land O’Lakes product model Alaqua Begay recently spoken out through social media against the blanket of ignorance towards indigenous peoples—but specifically in reference to the 1869 dairy-ditching discovery that some have referred to as “the greatest thing since sliced bread to put on your sliced bread.”
Begay claimed she signed a contract with Land O’Lakes at a point of financial hardship in her life. “I was in a bad place and was really looking for anything to help put food on the table.”
But many years after signing the contract with Land O’Lakes, Begay began to regret her decision. According to Flipside surveys, only one person in our random sampling of the Chicago area knew the name of the Native American on the butter container. Later questioning uncovered that that man merely misread the question.
“I had no idea what the survey was asking. Can I go home?” the man said.
Begay says this is a sign of larger issues, and a general theme of marginalization of Native Americans. Land O’Lakes CEO Ben Butterball has offered to reinvent their logo and take Begay off of their products, but Begay says that’s completely counterproductive and not the point at all.
